FIND OUT WHAT CONTACT LENSES CAN DO FOR YOU
Contact lenses are becoming the eyewear of choice for many Americans, as they look for alternatives to their glasses. There is an array of contact lens styles, wearing schedules, and brands available, so it can be challenging to discern which are right for you.
At Maryland Eye Care Center, we can determine if you’re a candidate for contact lenses and recommend the best choice of lenses for you. We have a wide selection of specialty contacts, inexpensive contacts, and cheap contacts. Just book an appointment, and we can help you with the rest.
THE CONTACT LENS EXAM
Your eye doctor will begin the exam with a conversation to make sure your health and your family’s health history are up-to-date. Feel free to ask any questions or express any concerns you may have about your eyes, or about contact lenses and what they can do for you.
The eye exam will consist of assessments to determine your visual acuity and refraction, as well as a thorough examination of your of your ocular health. During this exam, your eye doctor will check if you are a candidate for contact lenses. If so, your eye doctor will take detailed measurements of your eye’s shape and size to make sure the contact lenses fit correctly.
If contact lenses are a good option for you, your eye doctor will fit you with the appropriate lenses for your prescription. Note that your contact lens prescription is not the same as your glasses prescription.
After being fitted with a new pair of contacts, you will visit our opticians for an educational seminar on how to use and maintain your contact lenses properly.
WHAT CAN PREVENT YOU FROM WEARING CONTACTS?
Not everyone is a candidate for contact lenses. The following factors may prevent you from wearing contact lenses safely and comfortably:
- If you experience frequent eye infections
- If you have dry eyes or an imbalanced tear film
- If you have severe allergies
- If you are constantly exposed to dust, dirt, or smoke
SPECIALTY CONTACTS WE OFFER
Aspheric Lenses
When light enters your eyes, it passes through your cornea and your crystalline lens. Both of these have some degree of spherical aberration that compensate each other to provide you with clear vision.
However, as you age, the refractive properties in your crystalline lens can change, resulting in increased spherical aberration. Aspheric contact lenses help mitigate your spherical aberration and provide you with clear vision.
Toric Lenses
If you have astigmatism, you may require toric contact lenses. Astigmatism is a refractive error that affects how light bends at the vertical and horizontal axis, resulting in blurry vision at all distances. Toric contact lenses can help mitigate this issue.
Toric lenses are weighted at the center or bottom of the lens to prevent rotation and maintain clarity.
Multifocal Lenses
Multifocal contact lenses are designed with multiple prescriptions. They can help patients who may be experiencing myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism, together with presbyopia.
Hybrid Lenses
Hybrid lenses use two different types of material: an RGP lens in the center and a soft skirt surrounding it. This allows patients to experience clear vision provided by RGP lenses while still feeling the same comfort offered by soft, hydrogel contact lenses.
Scleral Lenses
Scleral contact lenses have a larger diameter than other contact lenses, allowing them to sit on the sclera of your eye and “vault” over the cornea. Scleral lenses can help patients who are hard to fit or have an eye condition that prevents them from wearing traditional contact lenses.
Ortho-K Lenses
Ortho-K (orthokeratology) contact lenses are a type of contact lens that gently reshapes your cornea while you sleep. When you wake up, you can remove the contacts and experience clear vision without the use of contacts or glasses. If you stop wearing the contact lenses, over time, your cornea will eventually revert back to its original shape.
